Kwanzaa (or Kwaanza) is a week-long Pan African festival celebrated primarily in the United States, honoring the African American heritage. It is observed from Dec 26 to Jan 1 each year.
Kwanzaa consists of seven days of celebration, featuring activities such as candle lighting and pouring of libations, culminating in a feast and gift giving. It was created by Ron Karenga and first celebrated from Dec 26 to Jan 1, 1967, timed to coincide with Christmas so it would be remembered. Karenga calls Kwanzaa the African American branch of "first fruits" celebrations of classical African cultures.
According to African American Leader Al Sharpton, Kwanzaa was created to "de-whitize" Christmas.

“African American Leader Al Sharpton, Kwanzaa was created to “de-whitize” Christmas.”
Al Sharpton is insane.
Kwanzaa never has, and never will have anything to do with white, Christmas, or commercial holiday greeting cards and discount gifts from wal-mart; Sharpton is acting real simple right there.
Kwanza was created by the elders, mothers and fathers, in California, and it was a means of keeping children out of and off of the streets, bringing families together, and instilling in the community basic principles that exist in all of the various African cultures of the continent. Perhaps, most importantly: Self-Determination.
Karenga and US took it and refined it and processed it, into a series of family dinners, focusing on each principle, each day, leading up to the final day, where All the principles are covered and celebrated with the big community feast, and the gift giving, which was/is to consist of HANDMADE gifts, Not gifts or greeting cards Bought from any store. Karenga also added the extra A to make it Kwanzaa, because they needed 7 letters for the children to hold, and to match the 7 principles.
The community accepted his ideas and modifications, and adopted it ever since; it spread from there.
